LATEST NEWS Sun 18 Mar – Somerset Countywide Festival. We have 2 teams entered into the  festival, the Tor Tigers and the Tor Terriers……Details of the festival can be found here 2018 Festival Info – U8s Somerset Countywide

Please can you aim to arrive no later than 1000 as the first match is at 1015. Also please let us know if you have accepted on Teamer and are now not able to attend , as we need to register the players into each of the 2 teams by name.

The  U8s team is for children in School Year 3 (a player’s age grade is determined by their age at midnight on 31st August at the beginning of each Season and that age grade applies for the whole Season.)

The focus is on having fun, and we welcome players of all shapes, sizes, experience and ability. The children come from a mix of local schools, and so it is a great opportunity for them to meet new friends.

The team trains every Sunday at Tor and have a series of matches home and away agains other clubs in the region. Towards the end of the season there is the opportunity to play in rugby festivals which are ’round robin’ competitions against local clubs.

Under 8s play non contact tag rugby, in teams of 5 or 6 a-side. The focus is on fun – ensuring the players enjoy the game whilst they build on their skills for the future. At Tor we have RFU accredited volounteer coaches who provide the training for the children, with support (when available) from someof the senior team players.

The rules for U8 tag rugby can be found here : UNDER 8s RULES OF PLAY (Tag Rugby)

More information on Age Grade Rugby can be found on the RFU Website

12 Nov 17 – The season has started really well and all of the coaches are impressed at how the players are improving. We are also delighted to welcome Mark to the U8 coaching team – the more coaches we have, the better! We now have 23 players registered in the U8s section, and so we have already seen the benefits of being able to coach smaller groups, and it also makes it easier for coaches to take a week off!

Hopefully the new 1000 start time will give families a bit more of their afternoon back, and it also allows for the club to be used for some of the older youth teams, as well as the ever growing girls team. See you next week at Crewkerne!

1 Oct 17 – The team are really starting to get the hang of this rugby malarky! We have 20 players currently registered in the U8s and so far, all of the coaches are really impressed at how keen they all are. We have had some great training sessions and last weeks training game against Burnham, was a great introduction for some of the team to their first competitive game. We are playing Yeovil away on Sunday 8 October, which is just South of Yeovil on the Dorchester Road BA22 9TR. Please try and get there by 10am, and if you can confirm attendance (or otherwise) on Teamer, that would be a great help. We will have some spare shirts for those players who have not been able to get their Tor Tops yet… See you there!

3 Sept 17 – First Training Session of the new season! U8s had 14 players this week, including 2 new players, Grace and Jack. Despite the rain, the kids were all very enthusiastic and excited to be back. We started off with a good warm up session of Stuck in the Mud, into some passing training which developed into 2 mini games and finished off with big game of Tag.

U8 Coaching Staff – Season 2017/18

Ian Armstrong
U8 Coach / Website manager
Ian is now in his second year of coaching this team and is looking forward to another fun season
James Neal
U8 Coach
James is in his second year coaching at Tor and has completed the Rugby Ready RFU training course and his Level 1 coaching qualification. James finds that coaching 7 and 8 year olds reminds him of his time spent in the Royal Navy....
Ed Lazenby
U8 Coach
Ed is another full time coach with the under 8s who is too modest to supply his picture for the team page...
Mark Abou-Samra
U8 Coach
Mark is the newest (and most welcome!) addition to the U8 coaching staff...A keen university rugby player, he now brings his skills and experience to Tor U8s. Work commitments mean that Mark can't be with us every week, but that hasn't stopped him from helping to coach the finest U8s team in Somerset.
Could This Be You?
Team 'Mum'
U8s are looking for a Team 'Mum' to help the coaches with running the team, supporting the players and being a focal point and 'go-to' person for the parents. Dads and other friends and family of U8 players are, of course, also welcome...we may have to re-think the job title though! Click on the email link to get in touch....
